Compressed air contamination takes various forms, with particular emphasis on water, oil, and solid particles, as taught by the international standard ISO 8573. Water comes from the moisture present in the ambient air (water vapor), and oil and solid particles have two sources: atmospheric air and the compressor itself.

In compressed air, we also find viruses, bacteria, amoebas, and other microorganisms, typically classified as "solid particles", but deserving of particular classifications depending on the application.
